The club was originally intended to be a venue for bands performing music to their name. However, it became known as the venue for American punk bands. Bands that have performed at the club and become famous have included Ramones, Patti Smith Group, Television, Mink Deville, The Dead Boys, The Dictators, Richard Hell & the Voidoids, The Cramps, The Fleshtones, Heartbreakers, Suicide, Misfits, Blondie, Talking Heads and Bad Brains.
